Estrogen, Exercise and Cancer
Welcome to my Estrogen, Exercise and Cancer page.
One of the world’s foremost cancer experts, Robert Gorter, MD, PhD, predicts that in the first half of this century cancer will affect 50 percent of the American population, with similar incidence throughout the developed nations. That means every other person will have a cancer diagnosis at some time in his or her life, but will not necessarily die from cancer. The only silver lining here is that a fit lifestyle will be more important than ever.
For more than two decades researchers have been investigating the relationship between physical activity and the reduction of cancer risks in population-based control studies. These large surveys, sometimes involving tens of thousands of participants, give us the most valuable information about the long-term protective effects and types of exercise we can practice.
Previous research has linked high levels of estrogen to an increased risk for developing breast cancer. Women who exercise heavily are, in general, older at the time of their first menstrual cycle, and tend to have irregular periods and a shortened production of it, which translates to a lower body-exposure to it, the research say.
Similarly, postmenopausal women who are physically active have also been shown to have lower levels of it. Dr. Amy Trentham-Dietz. from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, says this explains why increased physical activity reduces the risk of breast cancer. Other potential mechanisms include prevention of weight gain, regulation of insulin sensitivity and alterations in immune function.
Taking all these factors into consideration, “intervention studies assessing the effect of physical activity on (estrogen) and other hormone exposure, and other biomarkers of risk,” says Trentham-Dietz. And the studies would help identify the groups most likely to gain benefits from it.
Be sure to take care of your body. I hope the information in this page helps you make the best, healthy decisions for you and your loved ones.
